The Old Man and The Sea

I took a recent trip to Cuba and of course brought an Ernest Hemingway book with me. The Old Man and the Sea (a quick read) has wonderful character descriptions.  above, the old man and his nemesis. below, a close up of the two.

 

The Animation Collaborative

Guys! I'm super excited to be teaching Character Design at The Animation Collaborative this spring right here in the bay area (Emeryville). This place produces nothing but quality instruction and solid student work so I look forward to contributing what I know and in return absorbing. I've had the opportunity to visit as a guest lecturer in the past so I can't wait to delve in a bit deeper. Go apply and maybe I'll see you in April :P

hey guys and gals just wanted to announce that i'll be in the 36/36 spoon show this friday at paxton gate kids right here in sf! cool right? artist, designer & mastermind planner, courtney cerruti is to blame. thanks to her the ink and paints meet the wood once again :) below is my piece... hooded delinquent julio, who's terribly misunderstood. his ears are simply cold.

12 o'clock boys

recently watched '12 o'clock boys' and was instantly addicted to the characters, the pictures, and the sounds of this beautiful film. while some will write these kids off for their choice in extracurricular activities i champion and choose to see them as passionate, kids... a rare trait at any age, especially adolescence in my experience.

walking away inspired i imagined what a picture book might look like for the 12 o'clock boys. above is what i came up with. featuring of course 'pug', the little man with a big heart and some bigger balls. 'this one right here... i don't know where he came from' - pug's momma

part of my new years resolution is to do a colored sketch every night. ambitious i know... let's see how long it lasts :P this one is inspired by a day trip up to an old boat yard along the coast.

Two things always excite me this time of year... Atole and Tamales! The inspiration for the illustration above. Merry Christmas you guys! I hope ya'll stay warm and enjoy all of your traditions with loved ones. I know I will :)

... an original piece I just finished for an upcoming show at Q Pop in los angeles on november 16th. (next saturday... the weekend of ctnx!) i'll admit I wasn't much into japanese sc-fi growing up but it sure is fun to look at. the designs are bananas. come by if you're in town and/or enjoy the piece below :)
